The State Cinema Grays

Our latest challenge has presented itself as a restoration and redevelopment proposal for the former State Cinema in Grays. It is one of only eight ‘super cinemas’ in England, with its listing of grade II* reflecting its great architectural and historic importance. Opened in 1938, it is a colossal brick building whose tower in particular forms a landmark in the town centre. Its external character reflects Modernist architectural influences, enveloping an interior that includes a single auditorium accommodating 2,200 people.

With proposals at an early stage, we are working on ideas to reinvigorate the building, returning the excitement to this magnificent icon. In bringing new life to a piece of urban fabric of this scale, we are keen to generate a positive impact on the wider surrounding area.
