The Rose & Crown
Maldon
A building of significant local heritage The Rose & Crown in the ancient market town of Maldon represented an exciting challenge for KDPA to breathe new life into a genuine 16th century Inn.
Material authenticity was paramount to the design both inside and out.
Working with the conservation officer KDPA went to painstaking lengths researching the original building construction and then sourcing genuine reclaimed materials from local salvage yards to create a seamless extended dining area. Materials included reclaimed clay peg roof tiles, local reclaimed bricks and exposed hand crafted character oak trusses based on a local barn design. Subtle, contemporary design touches on the interior including the artwork selection cleverly blended old and new – reinvigorating the interior whilst maintaining the visual quirks and eccentricities that are at the heart of this remarkable pub.
The schemes attention to detail received recognition in November 2015 winning an award for townscape regeneration at Maldon’s 32nd Conservation & Design Awards.
